On September 11, 2001, terrorists affiliated with the extremist group Al-Qaeda carried out a series of coordinated attacks against the United States. Four passenger airliners were hijacked and intentionally crashed, with two being flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, causing the collapse of both buildings. Another was flown into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the fourth crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. The attacks resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people, making it one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in world history.  Approximately 2,000 first responders, including firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical technicians, were involved in rescue efforts at the World Trade Center site following the attacks on September 11, 2001. As a result of their exposure to hazardous materials at the site, many have developed serious health problems, including respiratory issues, cancer, and other illnesses. It is estimated that over 200 first responders have died as a result of medical complications related to their rescue efforts.  The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is a non-profit organization based in New York City that was established in memory of Stephen Siller, a firefighter who lost his life on September 11, 2001, responding to the attacks on the World Trade Center. The foundation’s mission is to honor the sacrifice of first responders and military service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and to support their families. The organization provides support for families of fallen first responders, builds mortgage-free homes for severely injured veterans, and funds various initiatives that serve those in need, including burn centers and disaster relief efforts. The foundation is named after Stephen Siller’s heroic run through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, carrying 60 pounds of gear on his back.
